Volunteer opportunities for this spring

A quick disclaimer: Volunteering with Millwood Impact should be thoughtfully considered. We want to connect strong, kind, and committed volunteers to the kids and families living in Millwood and West Valley.

We are partnering with Orchard Center for a 6 week run of STAR Club on Mondays and Wednesdays from May 2nd through June 8th. The plan is to have 16 students in the program and we are so excited to get STAR Club up and running again. We have a lot of help from staff and volunteers who have seen STAR Club in action, so we plan to hit the ground running. In order to run STAR Club well, we will need more volunteers. I have a list of ways to volunteer written below.

Star Club mentors are caring adults who commit to attending star club one or two days a week with a group of 4 students, grades 3-5. Mentors are first and foremost, present to be caring adults in the lives of the participants. This means modeling patience, compassion and being present with the students. Ideally groups will also have a Jr. mentor who is in high school. Jr. Mentors are present to be peer mentors to the students and to participate in the activities.

Station leaders are responsible for teaching a life skills class to a small group of students participating in Star club. Station leaders should be well-versed enough in the life skills activity that the participant should glean something that will stick with them. These classes should be age-appropriate and practical. These classes include, but are not limited to; cooking, sewing, art, steam kits, games. We are also in need of volunteer tutors who are available to help with homework if the need arises.

Volunteer drivers provide transportation in our 12-passenger van for families who aren’t able to pick their child up after STAR Club at 5:30 p.m. We are in need of drivers who would meet at the Millwood Community Center Mondays and Wednesdays around 5:15 p.m. to drive up to 10 students home.

If you are interested in volunteering in any of these ways, either this spring for 6 weeks or in the fall, please fill out this form.
